Patapsco under ice

Look I found (very) green

Pupal stage

Icemounds

Taco and Mr. Whiskey

Sure is frozen...

I find a certain amount of calm to come from shivering my ass off in the name of simply being outside. A prolonged stretch of 20-something degree days will give you an entire state park to yourself, and if you're careful, you'll find things worth looking at. Also, I really do seem to be good with finding color - look at that wonderful deep green that comes from the algae out of the creek!

  1. Now is a good time to scout for orchid sites. If you can find the leaves of Downy Rattlesnake Plantain or other species with winter foliage, you stand a good chance of finding more orchid species in the spring. Orchids tend to grow in similar areas. Finding one species often, but not always, means there are more. Plus, you can GPS the plants you can see now, and come back when they'll be in bloom.

  2. By the way, I love the frozen Patapsco. You should try to get the green right after some snow, if possible. Would look awesome.
