Fun with Macro Flowers

43reverse
I finally strapped the 43 onto the camera in reverse. Took me long enough, eh?

50macro
This is through the 50 macro at about f16.

Why? Well, someone on DPreview's pentax board asked what a teleconverter or extension tube might do for their ability to use the 77 limited as a close-up lens. The light on campus was good today, so I went for the example photos.

If you're interested, I posted the comparison shots in gallery form. They're all explained in the notes.

Woop.

  1. i'm not a macro guy, but that's decentish DOF on the first shot for what it is.

so i sold my few rolls of Kodak HIE. i bought them for $1. i sold them for $30. each. damn.

i hope no film i WANT to use ever costs that much!

today is 'welcome to the ancient world of color photography' day i think. met a friend for lunch. both of us had a camera with ancientish kodachrome 64 in it. he had a nikon F (my old one, of all things), with a 50/1.4, and i had a leica IIIf with a 50/2. should be amusing to compare shots in a week or so.

he gets flowers in the park, i get the verizon guy with the building phone box opened, and fire trucks running drills in the parking lot.

  2. Wow... that's quite the profit. Agreed, I hope I don't run into that problem. Regular film already cost me too much!

Glad you like something about the first pic... I didn't really think posting flowers all spring was such a good idea, but I figured that, if I have the material available, I might as well post it. There's no sense, however, in doing the same three shots as everyone else over and over again.

That said, if this ear infection doesn't keep me from doing things in the morning light tomorrow, I may go back with the 52mm reversing ring, tube, and teleconverter, slap my 24 on all of that, and try to get a 5:1 shot of the end of one of the centerparts of those flowers. I bet it might have something cool to show for itself.

Sorry about the firetrucks (unless you got amusement out of them)... I know how it is, they've been doing on-and-off testing of the fire equipment in my building... one day, all the fire doors will have automatically closed, the next, our emergency light in the office will have decided to be on... stuff like that. Good fun, I say!

  3. Nat,

Pics from today's hike. I lost about 50% of my blood via cuts and ticks, but it was worth it for the surprise Yellow Lady's Slipper!

  4. This is probably my favorite of the flowers. I'd never heard of it before, but it's interesting, especially the part about the spider.

The pano series of that circleesque lagoon thing you found there... it looks like it would be a fun place to point a fisheye around, or an ultrawide rectilinear. I need to get out and explore waterways around here before it gets too hot... a complete lack of scenery for the last six months has bored me to tears with where I live.

  5. Nat,

I'm going to have to hook you up with some better outdoor location information. There's stuff to to in that neck of the woods, but you do have to work a little harder to find it. Here, finding somethign to photograph isn't hard, GETTING to it is. My legs look like they've been attacked by flies with razors for feet.

At least in Maryland too hot doesn't occur from May to October. ;) We are right now getting into the last of the long hiking days for me, because it is already pushing 80.

Someday, when I've left Alabama, I'm going to have to organize a few day expedition down to Sipsey, and another to GSMNP, to give you and some other people a taste of what they have to offer down here.

  6. the firetrucks were there to practice hooking up water lines, setting up the ladder truck, etc, in the office complex parking lot. was cool, tho it sucked that i missed the good parts due to lacking a window-having office, and my co-workers who HAVE a window overlooking the whole thing watching, but not telling me. bastards.

as for the macro, have fun? i'm not really a macro kinda person - were i, i'd pick up a bellows for the nikon stuff, and with the 24, i'd be good for about 22:1. sick.

ear infections suck - good luck? i'm generally never sick, only my current job has managed to get me a couple times over the years.

this monsoonish weather is neat to watch, except for one thing - my lawn needs mowed, and i didn't get to it yesterday. igh.

  7. The infections (yes, both ears) are clearish now, I feel fine and have since Friday evening.

I usually don't get sick, either, but every now and then, my allergies get so bad that my sinuses refuse to drain correctly. Oh well, quick course of antibiotics takes care of that.

Apologies for the macrobug in the next post... it was the only thing I could photograph with any degree of success yesterday. Stupid rain. I should go check how much we got.

  8. Nat,

You should have taken a film body to Cascade Falls if it was raining good and hard. An umbrella should keep a film body sufficiently dry. ;)
